Disney and Selfridges’ Visual Merchandising team have created a scheme of 5 windows including a recreation of Burton’s Alice character and the Mad Hatter’s tea party with props and costumes from the films actual wardrobe. The Wonder Room Concept Store was transformed into an ode to Alice, with a carefully selected edit of products ranging from fashion, beauty and accessories to jewellery, homeware and stationery. Participating Designers include Stella McCartney, Alice Temperely and jewellers Tom Binns and Anna Lou of London.

Paris’ Printemps dedicated its windows to Alice in Wonderland from February 1 to March 13, with special dresses designed for the occasion by Haider Ackermann, Christopher Kane, Alexander McQueen, Maison Martin Margiela, Ann Demeulmeester, Bernard Willhelm, Charles Anastase, Chloé, Manish Arora and special shoes from Nicholas Kirkwood.

As I mentioned before, the main theme for Printemps’s Christmas decoration was Slavic culture with all that stereotype ideas of Russia. However I bet you’ve never seen Russian pastiche so chic and stylish.

Facade renovation

In 2006 Borletti group acquired Printemps from PPR (Pinault-Printemps-Redoute). RREEF and the Borletti group invested heavily in France Printemps in order to turn the group into one of the leading retail players in Europe. So the facade renovation was part of that general revival. They hired more than 60 artisans to bring the flagship’s 1883 facade back to its original Belle Epoque glory.

12nd of November Printemps Paris presented its new facade. Paolo de Cesare (CEO of Printemps) and star guest Natalia Vodianova posed in front of holiday shop-windows, emphasizing significance of the event.

Shop-windows

Four different animated characters created by Chanel and Dior fashion houses attracted people 24/7 creating huge line in front of the store. But the crowd couldn’t see hard work behind these eye-catchers. Let’s look closer at the marionettes.

Princess Nadejda is wearing an identique little copy of a dress from Chanel’s Paris-Moscow collection. Princess Nadejda itself was a close friend of Coco Chanel.

Of course, Le Grand Duc Dimitri doll was inspired by Coco’s big love Dimitri Pavlovoch who was also involved in the creation of the famed Chanel №5 perfume. Still have no idea why his head looks like Andy Warhol’s.

Diorischka doll’s outfit by John Galliano reminds Christian Dior 90′s haute couture collections as well as pieces from designer’s RTW Fall 09 collection.

Victoire de Castellane (Dior Joaillerie designer) took inspiration from … her own personality.

Et voilà, Jean-Claude Dehix, hereditary puppeteer. He’s been brining live to Printemps’s windows for 35 years. It was his father who came up with an idea to use little motors instead of puppeteer’s hands. That was a beginning of the era of animated shop-windows. For now all the animated shop-windows in Paris (including Galeries Lafayette)  are Dehix’s handwork…sorry, motorwork. He also realised some projects abroad.

And I have to say about 2009 year identity. Beautiful hohloma-style prints are designed by Finnish illustrator Klaus Haapaniemi.

I know, it’s a little bit late for Christmas miracles, but I really want to share some of them with you. Isn’t it beautiful, this Printemps store window above? But let’s start with the famous late-night shopping street Champs Elysees and its illumination.

Champs Elysees

Les Champs Elysees, the most beautiful by night, when you are walking down the street, chewing une baguette avec fromage, you can feel yourself in the centre of the world. One of my favorite stores there is Publicis Drugstore with a lot of international magazines, designers’ stuff and delicious food inside. There is also a classy cafe. Store’s holiday decoration has been made by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, who also decorated vitrines of BHV store on Rivoli’s street.

Galeries Lafayette

Lacy dinamic illumination of Galeries Lafayette’s facade has been made by italian artist Valerio Festi. Inside the vitrines you can find gamboling bear cubs, rabbits and gingerbread men dressed by Jean Paul Gaultier, Kenzo, Marc Jacobs, Maje, Manoush and Zadig & Voltaire. Those vitrines also caused for a huge jamming.

Printemps

It’s always hard to choose between Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, both produce amazing visual merchandising. For Printemps this year it was the Russian theme.

First  of all at the end of the year 2009 Printemps Haussemann has presented the new facade after two years of reconstruction works.

But Printemps windows decoration is a subject for the next post because of its cultural magnitude.

I’ve visited Marc Jacobs site today just to check some store addresses and by pure accident I’ve found a set of Halloween MJ store windows. This subject got me excited and I’ve continued to search for ideas for Halloween window decoration.

Darkness at Sunrise, an installation created by artist Ryan Humphrey, is the special October 2009 window installation at the New York Moschino boutique. This unique installation piece, inspired by the Fall/Winter 2009 Moschino collection, celebrates the Whitney Contemporaries and is partnered with The Whitney Museum and Vogue.

New York-based graffiti artists Mint and Serf (MIRF), have collaborated with Marc Jacobs on the windows for his Marc by Marc Jacobs store in Soho.

The video where a pitcrew is making a Ferrari F1 with products of the collection Puma Motosport became widely popular. Mmm, good idea for an eye-catching visual merchandising!

In spite of this category’s name, you can’t call it “Visual Merchandising” at all. Display windows of famous Galeries Lafayette remind rather the real art gallery. Their eleven windows were created by famous film-maker David Lynch around the theme “Machines, Women and Abstraction”. 

In addition to the exhibit, the film-maker is also displaying his ‘I See Myself’ piece inside the store. The windows will be available until October 3rd.
